International Angelman Day

What is Angelman Syndrome?

Angelman Syndrome (often abbreviated AS) is a severe neurological disorder characterized by profound developmental delays, problems with motor coordination (ataxia) and balance, and epilepsy. Individuals with AS do not develop functional speech. The seizure disorder in individuals with Angelman Syndrome can be difficult to treat. Feeding disorders in infancy are common, and some persist throughout childhood. Sleeping difficulties are commonly noted in individuals with Angelman Syndrome. AS affects all races and both genders equally.

Individuals with Angelman Syndrome tend to have a happy demeanor, characterized by frequent laughing, smiling and excitability. Many individuals with Angelman Syndrome are attracted to water and take great pleasure in activities like swimming and bathing

People living with AS require life-long care, intense therapies to help develop functional skills and improve their quality of life, and close medical supervision often involving multiple medical interventions. Angelman Syndrome may be misdiagnosed since other syndromes have similar characteristics.

Angelman Syndrome is a genetic-based disorder resulting from the loss of function of the Ube3a gene in the brain. Loss of Ube3a prevents neurons from functioning correctly, leading to deficits in learning and memory. Importantly, loss of UBE3A does not appear to affect neuronal development, indicating that neurons could function normally if UBE3A function is restored.

Happy Mardi Gras!!!

This past weekend we made our family trip to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.  We had such a fun time-eating, drinking, catching beads and spending time with family.  The kids loved staying at Nanny and Poppy's house.  They also got to spend time with Isaac and Baby Elliot which was a plus!  Our hands were full both nights of the parade so this is the only picture we got minus Baby E.

Saturday morning we headed down to the French Quarter for beignets and shopping.  Summer loved every minute of it.  She made the best tourist.  And Austin fell in love with beignets -I'm pretty sure he could have had 100 more.

When we walked by this house Summer made sure we got a picture of it for Aunt Rosemary.

Chad finally found an empty beer can before we left so he could take his 'partied too hard on Bourbon St.' pic.

Our last stop was Poppy's work which was awesome.  We got to go through the whole CBS news station and had the set to ourselves.  I am not sure who had more fun the kids or Chad!

Looking forward to next year!!!!!!

Backyard Fun

The kids played out back last week for a long time without fighting and getting into trouble.  I decided to document some of their play time.  And yes Luke is running around in his underwear in January-this weather drives me crazy.  Every time I put away their winter clothes it gets cold again.

Taking A Winter Break At The Lake

After the first of the year we made a trip to the lake house. It was super cold but we had a ton of fun.  It was a nice relaxing weekend-thanks to my mom and dad who stayed at the house with Austin.

The kids stayed busy playing hide and go seek and shooting their Nerf guns.  Luke spent most of his time in the yard with the deer hitting golf balls.  He was cracking me up yelling at the deer to move so he could hit the golf ball.  But since the kids had gone through a whole bag of corn the deer were there to stay.

On Saturday we had a fire and made smores-super fun and a first time for us.

Play date with Antonella

We finally were able to get together with Antonella for a play date.  Her mom and I have been talking via email for months.  We had a instant friendship.  We met through a therapist at Austin's gymnastics.  It is such a small world because we found out they lived one light away from us.  The kids had so much fun playing with all of Antonella's toys and messing up their house.  She is is such a sweet little girl and it was fun to see our two angels play.

Rudy Roo Turns 2!

On December 20th Rudy turned 2 years old.  It's been a fun two years.  We made him a cake and he ate the whole thing in less than a minute.  The kids laughed the whole time.  He will be visiting the vet soon to get rid of two things in honor of his second birthday.  :)

Christmas 2012

I can't believe it's over.  We had a great Christmas.  The kids loved giving and getting presents.  Austin was so funny opening presents he knew exactly what to do and would even open others presents.  Summer and Luke loved all their presents and of course wanted more! We started off at Grandma and Paw-Paw's on Saturday-we missed the Timmons Family but got to see them this week. On Christmas Eve we went to Nanny and Pa Black's house. There was enough food/desserts to feed all of Houston. Christmas day we stayed home which was a first in many years. Luckily we woke up early and opened presents/had breakfast because the power went out due to the bad storm we had. We tried to take pictures but it was a little hectic! Hope you and your family had a Merry Christmas!!!!
